Jonathan Philip Goldsmith

Solicitor Admitted as a solicitor: 01/06/77

Main role not specified

  • I qualified as a solicitor at Frere Cholmeley & Co in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London (1975-1977), and then moved to the Citizens Advice Bureaux, first as an advice worker and then as a community lawyer in North Kensington (1978-1986). I joined the Law Society after that, and was Deputy Head, Communications, followed by Director, International (1986-2001). My next move was to become Secretary General of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), based in Brussels (2002-2015) ( After stepping down as CCBE Secretary General, I am now a self-employed consultant in European and international legal services, still based in Brussels. I have been writing a weekly blog on EU and international affairs for the Law Society Gazette, and a monthly article for the Gazette’s print version, for a number of years now. My current paid work is principally with the European Lawyers Foundation in The Hague ( It was set up by the CCBE to undertake funded projects in the area of justice and human rights. I offer strategic and policy advice, and also contribute as an expert to a variety of projects. I have developed a speciality in the law and policy relating to EU lawyers’ practice rights, and have policy experience of several areas of EU substantive law – for instance, crime, data protection, corporate social responsibility, family and civil procedure. I am also familiar with the EU institutions: the Commission, Parliament, Council, and the Court of Justice of the European Union. I now work on funded projects relating to EU law, and so keep myself up-to-date on developments.
